'BBC Newsnight and French national TV news — release of Jean-Paul Kauffman leading political journalist French TV

On 22 May 1985, Michel Seurat and Jean-Paul Kauffman were kidnapped by members of the Islamic Jihad in Lebanon. JPK was the first hostage to be released — he had suffered two years of the most appalling conditions and torture including mock executions. He had seen a close friend die from untreated diabetes. His release was almost a national holiday in France where wine producers had been putting into store a bottle of his favourite wine for every day he was in captivity.'
