"Drawing embraces a breadth of ideas, processes and parameters. The Jerwood Prize is an opportunity to profile the traditional and experimental in drawing without a prescribed and defined criterion for selection... I delight in draftsmanship, but am equally excited by conceptual processes of drawing as an activity in itself. Works on paper require the viewer to observe and absorb the act of drawing as it unfolds. The category of work submitted ranged in execution and expression from the monumental to intimate, obsessive or conceptual, observation from life to fantasy imagination. What was clear is the tenet that drawing revels in its directness and is unique to an artist's vision."
