Foreword (extract)
"This is the sixth year of the Open Drawing Exhibition at Cheltenham...Each year the panel changes, and each year the panel has differing priorities and focus. Consistently, a debate arises very quickly about what is of value in drawing, what makes for good drawing, and what the panel collectively want the show to represent. The show is the sum of its parts...We are indebted to this year's panel: Andrew Brighton, Mel Gooding, Isobel Johnstone and Doris Lockhart Saatchi for their hard work, good humour, patience and dedication to the selection of a significant show of contemporary drawing."

"When it comes to drawing, the ability to delight, to trouble and to satisfy with a mere line is one of the three talents I would most like to have.
...the exhibition that we have assembled here provides reassuring evidence that, in spite of pressures at work today, including those of the art market itself, there are those who can, in Barrett Newman's words, "make it new" with the simplest yet most sophisticated means of the unadorned line."
