Moments in Time
The work of 1998-2000 has been concerned with landscape interpretation. This has involved an exploration of the various ways in which landscape is presented: painting, drawing. collage, photography and literary description. The process has become 'ontological', as other influences have intervened. The apparent extremes of geological and poetic enquiry have become related in a 'dialogue' with the land. The resulting images also derive from observations in the

field: the use of photography and a 'reading' of the land that comes from the study of the subject matter of geography. The essential elements of landform become apparent within stark, uncompromising imagery. Any unnecessary interpretations are excluded as they are irrelevant and serve only as afterthoughts. The result is a barren land reminiscent of that before man, where nature was both 'savage and awful'.
